Dear Coach,
Do you get frustrated with your players getting in the wrong positions to receive the ball? Do their passes keep getting intercepted, or do your players lose possession from hesitating with the ball at their feet? If so, they need drills that train their minds as well as their legs.
Diamond Passing Drills is a video series focused on developing your players’ soccer brain and decision making off the ball. The drills start simple but rapidly become more complex, training players how to make decisions quicker. This includes where they need to be to receive the ball, what their next move is going to be and how to get the ball to the next player. The result is that their brains get as much of a workout as their feet, and they develop cleaner, crisper ways of thinking to partner those of their passing.
The motto of Diamond Passing Drills is ‘quickness in mind, quickness and feet’. You will discover why after witnessing professional first team coach Sam Saif demonstrate the improvements you can expect to gain when your players are thinking more as they are playing. They will know how to get in the right positions and how to create space to enable smooth passing combinations, making Diamond Passing Drills a video series that take your team to the next level.
“Passing and getting the ball up the pitch requires more than technique. It demands quick, accurate decision making as well”
Teaching players to think and play is one of the hardest challenges. The tendency can be to allow them to play based on instinct, and to leave them to improve their positioning at the same time as their technique. But providing drills that develop the muscle in their heads is just as important as drills for those in their legs.
It is essential to the team’s success that players are thinking all the time. Even when they are off the ball, they need to be thinking about how to pull defenders out of position, how to create space for advancing players and how to open up passing opportunities. Otherwise your team can be paralyzed by indecision and hesitancy, making it easy for opponents to intercept your passes and gain an advantage.
Diamond Passing Drills provides a highly effective way of training players to think and pass quicker and more accurately. The drills demonstrated by Sam Saif have been used to coach youth sides right up to elite professional players, with many ways in which they can be progressed. So whatever level you coach out, Diamond Passing Drills is packed with valuable insights on how you can develop one of your players’ most important muscles: their brain.
“Discover how to develop the skills of your players with insights from a coach with worldwide experience including 18 years at the academies of pro clubs in England”
Sam Saif (EUFA “A” License and F.A. Coach Educator/Tutor) has coached in the Academies of English Premier League and First Division clubs for almost 20 years. During that time he has had the chance to observe and learn from some of the most knowledgeable and creative soccer coaches in the game today.
Over the years, Saif has refined his coaching sessions to reflect what he has learned from his association with these coaches and also to reflect the developments of the modern game. Through his many years of experience, he has been able to keep what works and eliminated what doesn’t. What remains is a playing system, philosophy and some of the most creative, inspired and innovative training sessions available.
In 2008, Saif became the head coach at Brisbane Wolves and has had unparalleled success ever since. Under Saif’s guidance, the Wolves have won one championship in 2011, and were runners up in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Added to this were three Grand Final wins in 2009, 2010 and 2012 with a Grand Final runners up place in 2011.
What’s covered in Diamond Passing Drills
Diamond Passing Drills features a complete coaching session led by Brisbane Wolves’ head coach Sam Saif. He demonstrates how to use a progressive series of diamond drills to develop your players’ soccer brain along with smooth, accurate passing skills at the same time. What’s more, it is a coaching session he has used to train players at multiple skill levels, from under 8s to elite players.
Diamond Passing Drills begins with a straightforward warm-up in the diamond formation. Players pass to the next player in the diamond and then follow their pass to the next cone. This is then progressed slightly to players receiving the ball across their body to encourage movement off the ball, to develop their first touch and to create space for their pass. ‘Pass, set and spin’ is Sam’s methodology behind this drill. He also highlights how players can lose their marker simply by backtracking a few meters to create space in which to receive the ball.
The drill is again progressed with players brought into the middle of the diamond for making longer passes and to incorporate third man runs. If you play with a triangular midfield, you will find this section of the video series especially useful. The challenge is further raised with players instructed to perform passes with one touch only.

Sam Saif now introduces overlap runs into the mix. This added complexity pushes players to the limit, with them constantly having to think about where they need to be and what they need to next to get the ball to the right player. Saif then finishes the session by explaining how the drill can be further progressed by condensing the diamond to encourage quicker passing and accuracy.
What you will gain from Diamond Passing Drills
Quickness in mind, quickness in feet is this video series’ philosophy. The drills start simple but quickly progress in both complexity and intensity to challenge your players’ ability to complete smooth, accurate passes and to get in the right positions to receive the ball.
From watching Diamond Passing Drills you will gain:
As Saif mentions, quickness in mind, quickness in feet. A team that can’t think quickly off the ball can’t expect to be able to play with a high level of pace and accuracy. This is why it’s vital to ensure you know how to train your players’ decision making along with their technical skills. Diamond Passing Drills provides you with a complete session that shows you how to do it.
The drills in this video series have been used by the Sam Saif to train junior players right up to elite professionals. So whatever level you coach at, Diamond Passing Drills can be used to get your players’ minds working as quickly as their feet.
