When you coach young or adult players, it can be difficult to know what to focus on. Too often the focus is on developing technique, and trying to skip past the basics. But this can just stunt any player’s development. When they don’t understand the game’s core principles, they won’t know where they need to be and why so they can harness their technique. To solve this age old problem, two experts in youth coaching have created Coaching the Principles of Soccer – Attack and Defense. This book presents a structured approach to developing an understanding of how the game is played and to provide them with a solid base on which they can develop.
Coaching the Principles of Soccer – Attack and Defense provides the same training on the core elements of soccer its authors provide at the Nike Sports Camp and Education Football seminars. Harnessing detailed diagrams, coaching points and progressions, it provides a complete set of drills for developing the core principles of soccer. This includes drills for penetration, support, defensive compactness, concentration and more.
The drills in Coaching the Principles of Soccer – Attack and Defense will enable you to develop a team with a richer understanding of what to do, when to do it and why, in every phase of the game. The drills also provide a strong foundation on which you can add more technical drills and strategic play, and build players with coaching brains to match those in their feet.
“This coaching manual created by Jonny Carter further solidifies the opinion that he is one of the best coach educators in the industry today. He displays a clear ability to provide the reader with many variations of how the game can be played, but also how this is then broken down into individual sessions. I particularly like his candor when conceptualizing principles & how a trainer would then impart this mind set upon his/her players. In a game where there are many grey areas, the clarity upon which he delivers this text is truly enlightening. Jonny has a vision of the game that few coaches possess, and as such this piece serves as a very comprehensive learning tool for coaches of all ability levels & experience.” – Ally Bain, 1st Team Coach, Global Premier Soccer, UEFA ‘B’ Licence & NSCAA Advanced National Diploma
“This will help a lot of young coaches avoid the common mistakes, and give a reminder to some of the older ones too”
A common mistake, by many coaches, is to focus on technique. It’s understandable. We’d all love to have a team that plays with the flair and creativity of Barcelona. Developing highly skilled players from a young age seems like the best way to build one. But if you don’t get the fundamentals right, all the hours spent on technique are a waste of time.
Developing any player to the next level is like assembling building blocks. There are all sorts of components players need to have at the bottom before they can develop into technically gifted and tactically astute players. This is why it’s vital that they have strong foundations on which future building blocks can rest.
Coaching the Principles of Soccer – Attack and Defense provides a complete guide on how to build this foundation. It shows you exactly how to run practice sessions that will build your team’s understanding of what they need to do and why, and to gain a stronger basis upon which their future skill development can rest.
“A complete foundation level guide created by two expert youth coaches on the core principles to focus on from a young age”
Coaching the Principles of Soccer – Attack and Defense is a book born from the passion of its two authors, Jonny Carter and Michael J Louter, for developing the core skills young players need for success.
Carter has coached his own ‘Principles Based’ methodology on tactical soccer across Europe, America and Asia. His key specialty is youth development and establishing the right culture and environment in which young players can grow. He’s a strong believer in giving players the opportunity to solve real soccer problems, rather than rely on a dictated style of coaching, in order to grow.
Carter holds an ‘A’ License and is head coach at Kowloon Cricket Club, Hong Kong, and is responsible for delivering the Nike Sports Camp in Hong Kong for elite youth players. He also runs the Education Football program, which trains coaches to develop their knowledge from foundation through to advanced.
Michael J Louter has spent his life studying soccer coaching. In particular, he specializes in soccer psychology and the technical and tactical components that need to be combined to build a successful team.
While running elite soccer camps at Vitesse, Louter has been able to witness the benefits of his coaching philosophy firsthand. Through coaching at the camp’s state-of-the-art facilities in Tennessee, Louter has been able to work with elite level players and to further expand his vast coaching knowledge.
Louter holds a USSF ‘A’ Licence and an NSCAA Premier Diploma. He is currently the Director of Coaching at FC Dallas Tri and oversees the development of the U15-U19 teams.

“Jonny and I attended the same coaching course a couple of years back. I realized then how he breathes and lives football. He was always asking questions or challenging the group with another perspective. Hence I was not surprised that he had written this football book. I liked the fact that the book is based on the principles of football. This gives coaches a very clear understanding on what to coach when conducting their sessions.
